Oregon Newspaper ProjectNewpapers On Microfilm
ONP Homepage (how to obtain microfilm) This Project was begun in 1952 at the request of the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association. Realizing that many precious copies of historic newspapers were being lost (due to the disintegration of the paper on which they were printed), the publisher s contacted to UO Library to see if something could be done. The original scope of the Project was to microfilm all existing copies of all historical newspapers published in Oregon. After several years, when this object had been largely met, the decision was made to continue microfilming the newspapers as they were produced. The Project continues to this day, filming all Oregon newspapers that are not filmed by any other organization. The archival negatives are kept in an air-conditoned vault in the basement of the Knight Library. This negative bank could not possibly by replaced today, as many of the paper copies no longer exist. However, positive microfilm copies are available to anyone for modest fees. Many organizations and institutions subscribe to postive copies of various titles as the negatives are produced. The collection is utilized by people from all over America wh o are doing research into pioneer days, or genealogical research. |
