Mary Norton

   Mary Madeline Norton, a Madras resident, passed away on Nov. 12, 2008 at Mt. 
View Hospital. She was 95. Recitation of the rosary was held on Nov. 17 and 
mass of Christian burial occurred on Nov. 18 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church.

   Mary was born on July 15, 1913 in San Luis Obispo, Calif., to Allesandro 
and Caterina (Cottini) Mainini. She was married to Parr McLeod Norton Sr., who 
passed away in Feb. 1969.

   Mary attended school in San Luis Obispo, Calif. After her marriage to Parr, 
the couple ran a dairy in San Luis Obispo. In 1945, Mary and Parr moved to 
Willows, Calif., where they also farmed. In 1947, the couple came to a little 
town north of Madras, Ore., called Willowdale, where they purchased the Priday 
ranches. In 1950, they moved to Ashwood, Ore., to the "Jones Ranch" and ranched 
there until Mary sold the ranch in 1973. While in Ashwood, Mary served on the 
Ashwood School Board, the Intermediate Education Board and was an active member 
of the PTA. Mary moved to Culver after selling the ranch. In 1985, she moved to 
Madras. Mary served as a Jefferson County commissioner. She was an active member 
of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, where she served on the Parrish Council and 
the COWDEO for 25 years. Mary was in the board of directors for Juniper Bank 
until her retirement. She was part owner of the Madras Livestock Auction Yard. 
Mary was also a member of the Oregon Cattleman's Association and the Jefferson 
County Chamber of Commerce. In 1989, Mary was selected at the Jefferson County 
Citizen of the Year. Among all of her volunteer and community work, Mary was an 
avid and competitive bridge and pinochle player. She enjoyed needlepoint and won 
several blue ribbons for her work. Mary also loved her flowers, family and friends.

   Survivors include: her daughters and their husbands, Kathleen (Ken) Southwick 
of Culver, Ore., Parrline Norton of Terrebonne, Ore., Ann (Mark) Mallot of Powell 
Butte, Ore.; daughter-in-law JoAnn Norton of Madras, Ore.; grandchildren Kellie 
Ridenour of Seattle, Wash., Angie (Sean) Hagen of Crooked River Ranch, Ore., Tom 
(Stacey) Norton Jr. of Madras, Ore., Robert Norton of New York City, N.Y., Erica 
Fuller of Terrebonne, Ore., Kahl and Michaeline Malott of Powell Butte, Ore., and 
Josh Williams of Redmond, Ore.; great-grandchildren Danielle Fuller of Terrebonne, 
Ore., Emmett and Garrett Hagen of Crooked River Ranch, Ore., Jacob Williams of 
Redmond, Ore., Mylaena Norton of Madras, Ore.; sister Del Silvia of San Luis 
Obispo Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

   She was preceded in death by her husband; duaghter Mary Michaeline; sons Parr 
"Mac" Norton Jr. and Tom Norton Sr.; brothers Angelo and Henry Mainini; and sisters 
Peggy Quaglino and Flora Turri.
