Noral Kenneth Simmons March 21, 1916 - Feb. 2, 2001 Noral Kenneth Simmons of Powell Butte died Friday at Central Oregon Community Hospital in Redmond. He was 84. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Powell Butte Cemetery. A memorial service will follow at 3 p.m. at the Powell Butte Christian Church with reception following. Mr. Simmons was born March 21, 1916, in Derby, Iowa to George Hendrix and Flossie Elizabeth (Exley) Simmons. As a child, his parents moved to Montana where he was raised. He married Mary Helen Trobaugh on Dec. 8, 1939, in Fairfield, Idaho. She died in 2000. They farmed in Idaho and then moved to John Day where they ranched. Later he worked for the State Highway Department in Spray and transferred to the Prineville State Highway Dept. when they moved to Powell Butte in 1953. He then ranched there for Nick Rachor. Later, he became the first certified log scaler in Central Oregon for the Forest Service. He retired from the Central Oregon Irrigation District when he was 65. After retirement he delivered newspapers for The Bulletin, The Redmond Spokesman and The Central Oregonian for many years. Mr. Simmons and his wife were square dance callers in John Day, Seneca, Monument and Prairie City. They were also greeters for the Powell Butte Christian Church for more than 30 years. He was on the board at the Powell Butte Christian Church since 1956 and was an elder and deacon. He was still the treasurer of the Lords Acre Fund at the time of his passing. He enjoyed reading. Survivors include his daughter, Sandra Wagner of Mesa, Ariz.; son, Jerald of Fort Rock; sister, Betty Gustafson of Fort Dodge, Iowa; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and two brothers.
