Hello,

I am searching for a Max Melton. Max had a brother that moved to Salem, OR around the early to mid 1930's. Max and his brother's mother was divorced from my granduncle, Daniel Boone Melton. Daniel Boone Melton was born in Rosedale, Parke, IN in 1910. He died prematurely in a hit and run auto accident in Terre Haute, Vigo, IN on 27 Sep 1937. He was 27 yrs. old. His obituary states that he was survived by, among others, 2 sons of Salem, OR. I found out through family members that one boys name is Max. Daniel's certificate of Death Registration states he was divorced. I would like to hear from anybody that has a hint or clue as to how I can find these Meltons. I have a photo of Daniel, Max's father.
Thank you very much for any information.

Larry, I don't believe Marion CO/Clackamas CO cemetaries have been transcribed. I found a listing of cemetaries in the Woodburn area (this webpage.) They seem to be 1) Belle Passi, 2) St. Luke, 3) Auroa (IOOF), 4) Hubbard, 5) McLaren (I think this is for the persons sentenced to McLaren) and 6) Old Colony Cemetary. I'm also curious as to your Barnes name as I had a g-g-grandmother named Mary "Polly" Barnes. She was Cherokee Indian and I believe out of either SC or TN. Just let me know on the cemetary. Jimmy.

Surname: Knower, De Lap, Elliott

On which side of the hill is the Popcorn school? On the west (sunset) side or the east (sunrise)?

I have limited knowledge of the Knowers. The only marriages I know about are to Elliott and De Lap.

William H. Knower (Jan 1830, Boston, MA - 12 Apr 1909, OR) m Mary Emeline Elliott (15 May 1831, Bangor, ME - 15 Jul 1910, OR). They had a son William and a daugther Susan E.
'Susie' had a child whom she named William E. Knower on 24 Dec 1887 and who d 26 Aug 1964. Presumably all in OR. This was evidently out of wedlock. William E. m Alma A., b 16 Dec 1894, d 23 Jan 1986. Susie later married Josiah Whipple De Lap, my grand uncle. 'Joe' was b 28 Feb 1865, Franklin, Vernon Co., WI, d 19 Aug 1944, Salem, Marion Co., OR, but I think he was still living near Oak Grove in Polk Co at the time of his death. Possibly he died in the Salem hospital. This couple had no issue. But Susie's son inherited the place and I would like to make contact with any descendants, if any survive.

Incidentally I have a Hiram De Lap bible that contains a family sheet taken from an earlier bible or source that shows the Elliott family. Mary Emeline was the youngest of five children b 1819 -1831. Her father was Alfonso Elliott b 14 May 1798, d 4 May 1855, Badaxe (now Vernon) Co., WI. The De Laps and Knowers knew each other in WI. Probalby the Elliotts as well, but I have not found descendants of the Elliotts in Viroqua, Vernon Co., WI., or the museum there.

You can look up creeks, post offices, schools, anything. I will give you which COUNTY it fall in also.

I am sure the LINN CO. GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY would have information on Brownsville. It is also interesting to look up the name in any PLACE NAMES book, it might give you names of ancestors activities you did not know about.
It is also good to SUBSCRIBE to the COUNTY messages so you get all posts...and share information with the people researching the same area.

Also, for folks with links to Post Offices, the NARA National Archives (Seattle) has records of all post offices.

I was sure I had read one about Hayesville, but couldn't find it in the recent papers I had, so called the newspaper. A Dan Hayes, a free-lance reported called me back and told me simply this: Hayesville was named as a kind of joke from the new president at the time, about 1878, Rutherford B. Hayes (Rep). There was a gathering at the church and someone asked what the little settlement was called and there was 1 Democrat and the rest Republican and that was the joke. Hayesville is now just an area in Salem.

1895 Marion Co Census/Notts

Posted by La Velle Nott <NottNott@worldnet.att.net> on Mon, 20 Sep 1999

Surname: Nott, Knott, Naught, Kimsey

In the 1895 Marion County, Oregon census, I found what I think is another family living with my family. The people are:
Nott, Ephriam
Elizabeth
John
Addie
Hattie
Enayrd
Enoch
Mary
Claud
Cora
They all appear to have the same last name. This census lists height and weight instead of birthdates, but I believe that the first 4 on the list are adult couples. The rest would be children of the second couple, John and Addie Nott. Can anyone prove or disprove my theory? Thanks.

Surname: BECKNER, GORSLINE, SHAW, BOSTEN

Researching these pioneering farm families in Marion County.
John BECKNER arrived in Marion County abt 1852 with wife, Rosetta STANTON and settled in Keizer, OR. Their son, Aaron BECKNER married Nancy Jane "Jennie" HARRIS. Aaron and Jennie's son, Charles Loren BECKNER married Myrtle GORSLINE WHELAN (young widow of James WHELAN). Myrtle's father was Delmar GORSLINE; I believe Myrtle's mother to have been named Mahala SHAW.

All of the above were early farming families in what is now
the Keizer and Gervais areas outside of Salem in Marion County.

One daughter of Charles BECKNER and Myrtle GORSLINE WHELAN BECKNER was Elsie BECKNER BOSTEN GILLIAM. Elsie's first husband was Stanley Oliver BOSTEN. I am in search of information on the BOSTEN name. (Husband #2 was Denzel GILLIAM --- a dear man that I knew as "Grandpa.")

Am happy to share all information I have on these families. Most of my information is on the BECKNER line. If any of these names are familar to you, please email me.

DORSEY

Posted by Dale West <dwest@banet.net> on Thu, 22 Apr 1999

Surname: DORSEY, WEST

I am trying to locate information on my 2nd great grandaunt, Rosilla Ann (West) Dorsey.

In Pickens Co., Georgia Heritage 1853-1998, on page192 under the John Henry Dorsey family. Joshua Denny son of John Henry Dorsey b.1-16-1816, d.4-16-1904 and Sarah Denny. Joshua was b.3-16-1839 in S.C. married Rosilla West b.1843.

Joshua Denny Dorsey was the Pickens County, GA, Probate Court appointed executor of Rosilla's fathers estate in 1862. Folklore passed down in the West family by Rosilla's sisters and brother claim Joshua and Rosilla moved out to Oregon shortly after the Civil War ended.

Rosilla's parents, Eber and Elizabeth (Rippy) West, both died of smallpox in 1862, within weeks of each other. This left 4 young orphaned children (3 girls and 1 boy) who migrated to Texas with another older sister, Roxanna (West) Reed around 1869. After Rosilla or Joshua left Georgia the West children never heard from them again.

I have been trying to track them for several months to no avail. Recently, I received information from a great grandchild of Joshua Denny Dorsey that her great grandfather died in Salem, Oregon and had a wife named Rosilla West. This is all the information I have.

Any information (census information, death information, where they might be buried, issue, etc.) about Joshua Denny and Rosilla Ann (West) Dorsey will be greatly appreciated.

FALCONER

Posted by Al Falconer <falconer@tcc.on.ca> on Sun, 04 Apr 1999

Surname: FALCONER, BROWN

I am looking for descendants of David Falconer and Mary Brown. They came to Kelso, North Dakota in 1878 from Bruce County, Ontario, Canada and stayed until November of 1889, when they left for Sacramento, California.
Their children, all born in Ontario, were, George born 1853, Ellen Stenson born 1858, married Deforrest Conant, Mary born 1858, married Charles Conant, Janet born 1860, married William Scott, Margaret born 1864, married John H. Johnson, David born 1867 and John Wilson born 1870.
(David and John Wilson were last recorded in Salem, Marion, Oregon no date.) We have the line of Ellen and Deforrest Conant. They moved back into Canada. Their descendants are found in BC and Alberta.
We would be very interested in any information in regards to the descendants of any of the other children. We have not found where David and Mary eventually went. David is one of ten children of George Falconer and Janet Redpath.

The Redpath name is found frequently among the other branches and may also be found in David's family.
All information and inquiries welcome.

Springer/Teeters--French Prairie

Posted by Katheryn L. (Barber) Saunders <gr8kat1@aol.com> on Thu, 01 Apr 1999

Surname: Barber, Hodgdon, Zimmerman, Mullins

I am trying to track down evidence of the births, deaths, marriages, and property owned by these individuals--if you have copies of documentation or can tell me where to obtain it, please E-mail me:

Angline (Angeline?) SPRINGER married Thomas TEETERS in 1850 "near Salem Region,on French Prairie." Thomas was supposed to have owned 640 acres of land but sold it in 1853. I'm assuming this was all in Marion County, OR.

Their daughter Serilda Rosetta TEETERS was born in 1852 near Salem on French Prairie. She married John Nelson LOCKWOOD 18 Sept. 1870, but I don't know where. Their first child Emily May was born 22 July 1872 in San Luis Obispo County, CA, and died there 31 Oct. 1873. Serilda died 26 Dec. 1881 in Tillamook, OR. John died 7 July 1924 in Portland, OR.

Williamson-1899-Salem, Oregon

Surname: WILLIAMSON, BENSON, HOLCOMB, CARROLL

I am looking for Charles M. Williamson and Etta May (Williamson)Carroll. They were listed as living in Salem, Oregon in the last will and testament of Chester Williamson (Neponsit, Bureau, Illinois) written on 06 Feb 1899. Charles and Etta May were the children of LaFayette (deceased prior to 06 Feb 1899) and Mary E. (Benson) Williamson-Holcomb(I found out that LaFayette and Mary were divorced in Marion County, Oregon in 1882).
In the proof of heirship hearings on 27 June 1910 in Bureau County, Etta May is listed as deceased, and that the share of the estate is to go to "and the surviving husband of Etta May Williamson, deceased, a granddaughter, whose name is unknown." I just found out that Etta may married a Carroll. Does anyone have any information on the child that was mentioned on Chester Williamson's last will and testament? I would really like to connect with this family.

I am seeking all genealogical and biographical information on the above children and wife of LaFayette, including spouses and descendents.

I have much information on the Williamson ancestry from early 1600's up to the present. I would like to fill in this chapter of my book. I would also be more than willing to share any and all information I have.

This is a change in e-mail address from a previous post.

Please e-mail, or snail-mail me at:

Surname: Seguin, Rondeau

Carl,
Sorry for the delay. Returned home from a trip last night.
In my husband's line, I show the children of Antoine and Rosalie Seguin as being:
Louis Paul Henri Seguin
Victoria-Clarenda Seguin
Cleophas Laderoute (Seguin)
Rosalie Seguin
and our Selanise (Celimine) Seguin who married Joseph Rondeau.

In searching the Oregon State Archives (via the internet) I did come across a Court Case #0823 for an Alphonso Seguin. It was a Guardianship case in Marion County for the year 1882. That's all I know about it.
The url for that site is: http://159.121.115.13/databases/Lasso.acgi

In checking further, I ran across some e-mails I received previously from Seguin descendents. I'm presuming you know Jeanne St. Martin (who is descended from Joseph Alphonse Seguin) and Judy St. Martin Bridges, a cousin of hers. If not, let me know.

Hope this helps,
Harlene
