Two of M. M. Hazeltine's
stereoviews; both are hand titled in faint pencil on back as
"Miners" but this may not be Hazeltine's writing - maybe a
later person's guess at the subject matter. They are on the
mount style he used in Baker City and the series is called
"On the Line of the O. R.& N RR". In this case, they are not
printed but hand titled in ink, indicating maybe that this
was a limited edition. Apparently Hazeltine had a deal with
the RR which assisted them in advertising and allowed him to
travel and photograph all over Oregon and up into Alaska.
He also reissued his older California negatives, I think, on
Baker City Mounts, so one has to be careful to make sure the
subject is really Oregon. Also went down and did a series
of Yellowstone from Baker city.
In the big group photo, if these
are miners, the guys in front with ties, vests, etc must be
Management. In the smaller group, if miners, they are
cleaned up pretty good.
Maybe someone can match some faces
with photos in the archive collection and determine if these
are Baker City or Canyon City, or other.
