Marriage and Birth Records
Early Coos County Marriage Index
At present, only marriage records from 1854 thru 1900 are being indexed. Both Brides and Grooms have been indexed together alphabetically, although only the Groom shows the date of the marriage. Because many of the early Coos County marriages were to Native Americans [called Indian in the records] who did not have last names, all records without last names [indicated by "____"] will be indexed by given name and will be found before the "A's". If the record specified "Indian" the index will so note [may be abbreviated to Ind], other individuals without surnames may or may not be Native American. Because the quality of the microfilm of these early records is not the best, there may be errors in spelling of the surnames. In cases where I was unable to read the name, I have used ellipses [ ... ]. Please check all possible spellings of your surname of interest. When a record has the license, but no marriage return, the date will be preceded by "LD". Volume A, which is in extremely bad & fragile condition is located in the courthouse vault, and is not available for researchers to check. The other marriage books are available for anyone to go thru. A book for Marriage Records of this time frame is available from Jennifer Shank.
